The Difference and Characteristics of Soldered and Hot-Swappable Switches in Mec
Time:04-20-2023

The switches in a mechanical keyboard are connected to the keyboard circuit board through soldering or hot-swapping (also known as plug-and-play). Each method has different characteristics and application scenarios.

Characteristics of Soldered Switches:

Soldered switches are connected to the circuit board by soldering. This connection method is stable and reliable, and is less prone to loosening or poor contact.

Soldered switches have a longer lifespan and can typically be used for several years.

Replacing soldered switches requires professional repair personnel to perform the operation, which is more complicated as it involves disassembling and soldering the keyboard.

Characteristics of Hot-Swappable Switches:

Hot-swappable switches are connected to the circuit board by plug-and-play. This connection method is more convenient and faster, and users can replace switches by themselves.

Hot-swappable switches have a shorter lifespan, usually only a few dozen plug-and-play cycles. Therefore, if switches are frequently replaced, the lifespan may be even shorter.

Replacing hot-swappable switches only requires removing the keycap by hand, taking out the original switch, and then plugging in the new switch. It is very simple.

In summary, soldered switches and hot-swappable switches each have their own advantages and disadvantages. Users can choose the keyboard switches that are suitable for them according to their own needs and preferences. If switch replacement is needed, hot-swappable switches can be chosen; if more stable and long-lasting use is pursued, soldered switches can be chosen.
